Stenocactus phyllacanthus is a species of the genus Stenocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Stenocactus phyllacanthus grows solitary and only occasionally sprouts with depressed spherical to short columnar, dark bluish green shoots and reaches a diameter of 4 to 12 centimeters. The tip of the shoot is flat to slightly sunken. The 25 to 60 very thin ribs are strongly wavy. There are one to two areoles per rib . The one to three lanceolate central spines are initially reddish and later turn brownish or gray. They are up to 3 to 8 inches long. The top central spine is flattened. The two to seven white, bristle-like or awl 4 to 9 millimeter long radial spines are straight.

The yellowish white flowers have a brownish red throat and are up to 2 centimeters long. The green fruits are small.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocactus phyllacanthus is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , San Luis Potosí , Zacatecas, and Guanajuato . It was first described as Echinocactus phyllacanthus in 1836 by Albert Gottfried Dietrich and Christoph Friedrich Otto . Alwin Berger placed them in the genus Stenocactus in 1929 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
