Live and act

George Lawrence was the gardener of Reverend Father Theodore Williams in the rectory of Hendon ( Middlesex ). In 1841 he published a catalog with 222 species and varieties of the cactus family , which he classified into the nine genera Anhalonium , Mammilaria , Echinocactus , Echinofossulocactus , Echinonyctanthus , Melocactus , Pilocereus , Cereus and Astrophyton .

The long genus name Echinofossulocactus established by him was controversial for a long time. Some of the species he described for the first time under this name are now assigned to the genus Stenocactus .
