Stenocactus obvallatus is a species of plant in the genus Stenocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Latin prefix “ob-” for ver and the verb “vallare” for to surround, surrounded by a wall and means something like covered by thorns .

description

The usually single, but sometimes two-stemmed, gray-green plant body is pressed spherical to spherical and reaches a diameter of 6 to 11 centimeters. Its 30 to 50 thin, wavy ribs are very broad at the areoles . There are 2 to 4 areoles on each rib. The 4 central spines , of which the upper one is flattened and wide, are reddish brown and up to 5 inches long and 3 to 4 millimeters wide. The 4 to 6 white radial spines are up to 1 centimeter long.

The pale yellow to white flowers appearing at the apex are quite large and have a reddish center. The petals are elongated, pointed.

Nothing is known about the appearance of the fruit .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocactus obvallatus is distributed in Mexico in the state of México and in the capital district Distrito Federal .

The species was first described in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle as Echinocactus obvallatus . George Lawrence used the name Echinofossulocactus obvallatus in 1841 . Alwin Berger introduced the species in illustrated handbooks of succulent plants in 1929 : cacti in the genus Stenocactus .
