Stenocactus crispatus is a species of plant in the genus Stenocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Latin adjective crispus for 'ruffled'. Stenocactus crispatus is a taxonomically difficult species because it is very variable in shape depending on the location conditions.

description

Stenocactus crispatus grows with depressed spherical, yellow-green to dark-green shoots and reaches a diameter of 8 to 10 centimeters. The 25 to 60 more or less wavy folded ribs are slightly humped. The color and number of straight, stiff and unevenly long thorns are very variable. Their color is white to yellow or brown. The one to four central spines are between 10 and 65 millimeters long. The 2 to 10 radial spines reach lengths between 4 and 28 millimeters.

The purple-violet flowers , usually appearing in multiple at the shoot tips , are 2 to 4 centimeters long and have a clearly pronounced, scaly tube. The bracts are in two rows.

Stenocactus crispatus is very variable.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocactus crispatus is distributed from northern and central Mexico in the state of Zacatecas to the south of Puebla and Oaxaca .

It was first described as Echinocactus crispatus in 1828 by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle . Alwin Berger placed the species in the genus Stenocactus in 1929 . Synonyms include Echinofossulocactus crispatus (DC.) Lawr. , Brittonrosea crispata (DC.) Speg. (incorrect name Art. 11.4) and Ferocactus crispatus (DC.) NPTaylor . In 1992, Paul V. Heath made an attempt to divide the species into numerous forms , which, however, are all taken as synonyms today.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
