Stenocactus coptonogonus is a species of plant in the genus Stenocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species is derived from the Greek words "κὀπτων" for incised and "γὤνιος" for corner and means something like interrupted- edged .

description

The gray to blue-green, usually single, sometimes sprouting plant body is pressed spherical to somewhat cylindrical and reaches heights of growth of 5 to 10 centimeters with diameters of 8 to 11 centimeters. It has 10 to 15 wide, incised and slightly wavy ribs that have 5 millimeters (and wider) transverse furrows on the areoles . The slightly sunken, somewhat elongated areoles are 2 to 3 centimeters apart and are initially very white felt. 3 to 7 grayish white ringed thorns spring from them . The upward-pointing, wide, flattened upper spines are up to 35 millimeters long. The two lateral thorns have a square cross-section and point downwards. The lowest pair, which can also be missing, is slim and almost round.

The whitish flowers are up to 3 centimeters long, have a light purple to carmine red center and reach a diameter of 4 centimeters. The petals are elongated, pointed. The brownish-purple ovary has thin scales. The stamens are greenish below and purple above. The stylus is purple, the stigma is yellow and the outside is purple.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Stenocactus coptonogonus is common in the Mexican states of Zacatecas , San Luis Potosí , Guanajuato and Hidalgo .

It was first described as Echinocactus coptonogonus in 1838 by Charles Lemaire . George Lawrence used the name Echinofossulocactus coptonogonus in 1841 . Alwin Berger introduced the species in illustrated handbooks of succulent plants in 1929 : cacti in the genus Stenocactus .

Another synonym is Ferocactus coptonogonus (Lem.) NPTaylor .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
