Stenocactus vaupelianus is common in Mexico in the state of Hidalgo .

It was first described as Echinocactus vaupelianus in 1931 by Erich Werdermann . Frederik Marcus Knuth put the species as Stenocactus vaupelianus in the genus Stenocactus . A recombination into the genus Echinofossulocactus under the name Echinofossulocactus vaupelianus took place in 1938 by Ernst Tiegel and Hans Oehme . In 1980, Nigel Paul Taylor treated the species as Ferocactus ( Ferocactus vaupelianus ).

Whether Echinofossulocactus albatus (A.Dietr.) Britton & Rose is a synonym for the species has not yet been fully clarified.
