Erich Schöppner (born June 25, 1932 in Witten ; † September 12, 2005 ) was one of the best German amateur and professional boxers in the 1950s and 1960s.
Amateur career
Erich Schöppner started boxing in Witten and quickly developed into a great boxer. At the age of 20 he was German light middleweight champion in 1952. This gave him the chance to represent Germany at the Olympic Games in Helsinki . In the light middleweight division he had bye in the 1st round, beat Büchi, Switzerland , on points in the 2nd round and lost to the South African van Schalwyck, who later won the silver medal, on points in the 3rd round.
Erich Schöppner, meanwhile grown into light heavyweight, won his second German championship title in 1955. The high point of his amateur career was the 1955 European Championships in Berlin . In the final, he beat defending champion Ulli Nitzschke from the GDR , who was a head taller than him and had a far greater range, on points and thus became European champion.
Then he ended his amateur career. In 276 fights he had won 246, fought 14 times and lost only 16 times.
Profile career
Erich Schöppner played his first professional fight on January 22, 1956. In total, he played 40 professional fights until 1966, of which he won 34, boxed five times and lost only one fight. In 1958 he won the DM title by knocking out his former training partner Willi Hoepner and also the European Championship title on December 12, 1958 by knocking out the same opponent in the fifth round. The European championship fight was held in Hamburg , it drew 6000 spectators in the Ernst-Merck-Halle . Schöppner, who was looked after by trainer Otto Schmidt like Hoepner before, became the fourth German boxer to become European champion after the Second World War. He kept the title until May 23, 1963. He was not a great puncher, could only score points out of middleweight Peter Müller . The often announced world championship fight against Archie Moore never happened.
In 1961 he was also German heavyweight champion against Albert Westphal and defended the title against Hans Kalbfell .
After losing the European Championship title in 1963, he resigned, but in 1966 he was tempted to play against the Prince of Homburg ( Norbert Grupe junior). The fight ended lightly for him - a draw. After that he never boxed again.
In his long professional career, he also defeated such strong opponents as Henry Cooper ( England ), Germinal Ballarin (France) and Chuck Spieser and boxed in a draw with Doug Jones ( USA ).
After his professional career, he started various professional approaches. Only the takeover of the Hotel Königsborner Hof in Dortmund together with his wife Ingrid and son Erich brought the desired business success for Schöppner, who lives in Unna and who also worked as an administrative employee for the city of Dortmund.
