In this he represented the Italian colors on April 26, 1954 in Milan, where he lost on points against Albert Westphal from Hamburg.
Profile career
1955 Rocco Mazzola joined the professional boxer. His domicile was Varese . As a southpaw, his left hand was his hitting hand. He fought his first fight on December 26, 1955 in Piacenza , where he was technical knockout winner over Vannes Benassi. With good results in Italy, he boxed his way up the rankings so far that he was able to fight Alessandro D'Ottavio for the vacant Italian light heavyweight championship on July 31, 1957 in Rome. However, he lost this fight on points. On October 12, 1957, he fought his first match abroad. In Frankfurt am Main he scored points over Uwe Janssen from Hamburg. At that time, Rocco Mazzola was already the No. 2 Italian light heavyweight. On October 19, 1957, Rocco Mazzola won a qualifying battle for the Italian championship over Domenico Baccheschi on points. In the subsequent title fight for the Italian championship, he won on December 14, 1957 in Milan over 12 laps over Alessandro D'Ottavio on points.
On May 12, 1958 Rocco Mazzola dared a foray into the heavyweight division and fought in Bologna against the Italian ex-champion in this weight class Uber Bacilieri in a draw. On June 28, 1958, he defended his Italian light heavyweight championship title in Saint Vincent with a technical knockout victory in the 4th round over Alessandro D'Ottavio. In order to move up the European rankings, he accepted a fight against the dangerous Briton Alex Buxton on July 9, 1958 . He mastered this task by beating Buxton over 10 rounds on points. On September 23, 1958, however, he lost the Italian championship title in Civitavecchia by losing points to Domenico Baccheschi.
Nevertheless, Rocco Mazzola got the opportunity to fight for the European title on April 11, 1959 against Erich Schöppner from Germany . This encounter took place in front of 15,000 spectators in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle. He delivered a courageous and almost even fight to Schöppner and only just lost on points after 15 rounds.
On June 1, 1959 , his attempt against Santo Amonti again failed in Rome to become Italian light heavyweight champion. He lost to this after 12 rounds on points. He landed a remarkable victory immediately afterwards when he defeated Giulio Rinaldi in Rome on July 13, 1959 in the first round by technical knockout. In a revenge meeting, however, he was defeated on October 2, 1959 in Rome on points.
On April 2, 1960, Rocco Mazzola competed in Munich against Bubi Scholz , the German ex-European light heavyweight champion and lost after 10 rounds only on points.
Then he switched to the heavyweight division. In this weight class he was again Italian champion on May 14, 1961 in Padua with a points win after 12 laps over Federico Friso. On October 2, 1961 he defended this title by a draw with Franco Cavicchi and on December 22, 1961 he won again in a title fight over Federico Friso on points. On March 17, 1962 he lost in Bologna against Franco Cavicchi on points and had to surrender his Italian championship title to them. Then he ended his boxer career.
