Albert Westphal (born August 5, 1931 in Hamburg ) is a former German boxer . He was German master among amateurs and professionals.
Career
Amateur career
Albert Westphal, who learned to be a baker at a young age, began boxing in 1948. He belonged to the BC Heros Hamburg . With a height of 1.71 meters he was of stout stature as an adult and always had the shorter range in his fights against mostly larger opponents. He was therefore dependent on getting into the half distance to compensate for this disadvantage. He boxed as an amateur at first in the light heavyweight division and became Hamburg champion in 1953 and German champion in the same year. In the final battle he defeated Rudi Horoba from Dortmund on points.
In 1954 he was again Hamburg light heavyweight champion. At the German championship of this year he met Erich Schöppner from Witten in this weight class in the semifinals , against whom he lost on points.
In 1955, his last amateur year, he started in the German heavyweight championship. He lost in this championship in the semifinals against Hermann Schreibauer from Neckarsulm on points.

Profile career
Albert Westphal switched to professionals in the spring of 1956. His domicile remained in Hamburg. Gustav Eder acted as his trainer at the beginning of his career . Even with the professionals, Albert Westphal always tried to get into hand-to-hand combat and relied on attack-like attacks. Because of this, his fights were always spectacular, whether he won or lost. In his professional career he fought in the heavyweight division, and with a body weight of approx. 85 kg he was always one of the "light" heavyweights.
He played his first professional fight on May 25, 1956 in Hamburg, defeating Heinz Lemm from Gevelsberg on points. After some fights in Germany, most of which he won, but also suffered a few defeats, he came on July 18, 1957 in Barcelona to a surprising point victory over the Spanish heavyweight champion José Gonzales. In the European rankings he climbed to rank 5 after this victory. On October 13, 1957, he competed in Bologna against the Italian ex-European champion Franco Cavicchi and suffered a knockout defeat against him in the 9th round.
On January 17, 1958 and March 21, 1958 Albert Westphal defeated Hans Friedrich from Dortmund and Erwin Hack from Hamburg in two qualifying fights for the German championship each after 8 rounds on points. On May 30, 1958, Albert Westphal then knocked out the reigning German heavyweight champion Hans Kalbfell from Hagen in the 5th round in Hamburg's Ernst-Merck-Halle and thus became German champion among the professionals for the first time. He defended this title on September 26, 1958 in Hamburg with a technical knockout victory in the 6th round over ex-European champion Heinz Neuhaus from Dortmund and on November 21, 1958 in Hamburg with a technical knockout victory in the 6th round Round about the former light heavyweight European champion Gerhard Hecht from Berlin successful.
The next title defense took place on April 11, 1959 in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle. Albert Westphal was knocked out by Hans Kalbfell in the 10th round and thus lost his German championship title. On June 16, 1961, he won this title by winning points after 12 rounds over Hans Kalbfell, only to lose it on September 19, 1961 by losing points after 12 rounds to Erich Schöppner.
On December 4, 1961, Albert Westphal fought Sonny Liston from the United States in the Convention Hall in Philadelphia . He lost this fight in the 1st round by KO Sonny Liston was a year later by a KO victory in the 1st round over Floyd Patterson new world champion.
Albert Westphal tried on September 26, 1963 in the Hamburg Ernst-Merck-Halle in the fight against the Berlin Gerhard Zech again to become German heavyweight champion. But he lost this fight in the 11th round by technical knockout On April 15, 1966 Albert Westphal boxed again against Gerhard Zech for the German championship title in Hamburg, but also lost this fight by technical knockout in the 10th round.
He then ended his professional career, but made a comeback five years later. He defeated four opponents in the so-called second row in 1971 and finally ended his career on October 1, 1971 with a victory over the French Henri Ferjules, whom he knocked out in the 8th round.
