Gerhard Hecht (born March 16, 1923 in Berlin ; † February 22, 2005 there ) was a German professional boxer .

Career

Gerhard Hecht was one of the formative boxers of the first post-war years in Germany. He began his professional career in 1947. His manager was Bruno Müller and the promoters who organized most of his fights were Joachim Göttert and Walter Englert. On April 2, 1950 he boxed against Hans Stretz , against whom he had already lost in an earlier meeting in 1948 by knockout, for the German middleweight championship in a draw, Stretz defended his title. Only 1.5 months later, on May 14, 1950, it was against Herbert Kleinwächter for the German championship in the light heavyweight division, but this fight also ended in a draw.

On June 24, 1951, Hecht competed against Sugar Ray Robinson at the Waldbühne Berlin . Robinson was initially disqualified after an irregular hit in the second round, which would have been only his second defeat in 131 fights. However, the fight was later turned into a no-scoring fight.

In November 1952, Hecht became German light heavyweight champion after winning points over Willi Hoepner . In 1954 he won the European title by winning points over the French defending champion Jacques Hairabedian . Even before that, on February 10, 1953, in Berlin, he had achieved a remarkable draw against the ex-European heavyweight champion, Belgian Karel Sys .

He lost both titles to Hoepner on March 11, 1955, but was able to recapture them three months later. In addition, he won the German heavyweight championship against Heinz Neuhaus in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle, which he lost to Neuhaus a year later.

In 1957 he managed to win a points against the Dutchman Willy Schagen , but then lost his German championship title to Hoepner, and the European championship title to the Italian Artenio Calzavara . In 1958 he finally ended his career.
