Hans Stretz (born January 19, 1928 in Erlangen , † September 22, 1997 in Berlin ) was one of the top German professional boxers in the 1950s.

career

Hans Stretz began boxing as a teenager at TV 1848 Erlangen and became a professional in 1948 after a short amateur period. As early as 1949 he won the German middleweight championship in Berlin by defeating Peter Müller ( Cologne ). He kept this title until 1950, then was again German middleweight champion in 1952/53 and German light heavyweight champion in 1956. Stretz boxed technically and tactically well, cleanly and elegantly and won so many fights.

On June 8, 1952, he was embroiled in the biggest German boxing scandal of the post-war period, when Peter Müller knocked out referee Max Pippow in the eighth round in their fight for the German championship because he felt constantly disadvantaged by him . Stretz won the German championship title again, as Müller was of course disqualified.

During his career, Hans Stretz boxed against a large part of the German and European elite in the middle and light heavyweight division. But he never got the chance to fight for a European Championship or World Championship title. The most famous boxer he fought against was the multiple world champion Sugar Ray Robinson from the USA , against whom he lost on December 25, 1950 in Frankfurt am Main due to a technical knockout in the fifth round. He also fought against European champion Charles Humez ( France ) once in a draw and once lost just by points, won against ex-European champion Willi Höpner ( Kiel ) on points and also beat ex-world champion Randy Turpin ( Great Britain ) on points.

In early 1957, Hans Stretz had to end his boxer career because of a torn retina . He became a professional wrestler ( catcher ) and fought as such until 1973. Then he tried his hand at being a restaurateur. Since 1980 he has lived largely forgotten and completely impoverished in Berlin.
