Artenio Calzavara (born February 9, 1928 in Camposampiero , Veneto ) is a former Italian boxer . He was European and Italian light heavyweight champions

Career

Artenio Calzavara, a former miner, became a professional boxer in 1953. No successes are known from his previous amateur days. His home as a professional boxer was in Varese. He always boxed in the light heavyweight division, which at that time had its weight limit of 79 kg. His manager was Bruno Zambarbieri. He fought his first fight on March 18, 1953 in Bolzano , where he came to a technical knockout victory in the 5th round over his compatriot Rino Sofisti. In his third fight, which took place on September 26, 1953 in Milan , he suffered his first defeat in the fight against Alexandria Ceremonia.

On February 26, 1954, he boxed for the first time abroad. In Stuttgart he reached a draw against the German Toni Gruber. On December 10, 1954 he boxed in Berlin against the German William Besmanoff and was subject to this on points. In 1954 he got into the ring a total of 10 times, of which he won 7 fights, three times he boxed in a draw and he only lost one fight. His match record in 1955 was similar: 10 fights, 7 wins, 2 defeats, 1 draw.

On April 21, 1956 he managed to become Italian light heavyweight champion in Milan. He beat Fernando Janilli there in the 12th round by technical knockout. On July 14, 1956, he defended this title in Saint Vincent with a technical knockout victory in the 11th round over Alessandro D'Ottavio. Two more successful title defenses followed: on October 31, 1956, he defeated Ivano Fontana in the 10th round in Prato by technical knockout and on January 1, 1957, he won in Varese over Sergio Burchi after 12 rounds on points.

On July 12, 1957, Artenio Calzavara boxed in the Vigorellibahn in Milan in front of 15,000 spectators against the German Gerhard Hecht for the European light heavyweight title. The fight was pretty even, but the much younger Calzavara had gained some advantages towards the end of the fight. The referee Esparguerra from France, authorized to make the sole decision, then declared Artenio Calzavara the points winner and new European champion . Gerhard Hecht and his German entourage of course saw it differently and accused the referee of fraud. Of course, nothing changed in the judgment.

On October 12, 1957, Artenio Calzavara competed in Frankfurt am Main against the German Erich Schöppner in a non-title fight. Schöppner won this fight clearly on points. On March 1, 1958 Calzavara fought in Johannesburg against the African champion, the South African Mike Holt and lost this fight by technical knockout in the 5th round. On May 30, 1958, Artenio Calzavara defended his European title against Willi Hoepner from Germany in Hamburg . He underwent several fouls, so that he was finally disqualified in the 6th round and Hoepner was the new European champion.

In his last professional year in 1958, Artenio Calzavara completed a few difficult fights against consistently strong opponents with varying degrees of success. A January 8, 1958 he was defeated in Rome against Giulio Rinaldi on points. On May 8, 1958, he lost in Berlin against Bubi Scholz on points. On October 2, 1958 he came to a Techn KO victory in the 7th round over Ottavio Panunzi and on November 27, 1958 he drew in Rome from Domenico Baccheschi. On December 26, 1958, he played in Gothenburg against the Finn Pekka Kokkonen, the last fight of his boxer career. This fight ended in a draw.
