Jacques Hairabedian (born November 7, 1926 in Fumel , France, † December 14, 2014 in Bastia ) was a French boxer of Armenian origin. He was European light heavyweight professional boxer champion .

Career

Jacques Hairabedian grew up in Issy-les-Moulineaux, Clamart Meudon, as the son of Armenian parents who fled Syria to Marseille from persecution by the Turks in 1915 . A French citizen by birth, he left school at 15 and went on to work in a factory.

Amateur career

Jacques Hairabedian started boxing at the Issy Jockey Club in 1943 at the age of 17 and joined the French Army in 1944. In 1946 he became champion of the Île-de-France and French military welterweight champion. In 1947 he achieved his greatest success in his amateur career. At the championships of the allied armed forces taking place in Berlin , he took first place with a points victory over the American James Johnson.

Profile career

Jacques Hairabedian played his first professional fight on October 9, 1948 in Paris . In the middleweight division he won it over Bernardo Pacini on points, against whom he lost on January 18, 1949 after three quick knockout victories over French opponents, in revenge by disqualification in the 5th round. In 1950 he won victories over Mohamed Embarek and Ben Tahar, with whom he won the right to challenge the French light heavyweight champion Albert Yvel .

This championship fight took place on April 8, 1950 in Algiers and Albert Yvel won through techn. Knockout in the 6th round. Jacques Hairabedian proved that he had overcome this setback well on November 17, 1950 in Berlin , when he fought a draw against the dreaded German knockout bat Dieter Hucks .

On November 11, 1951, he won the French light heavyweight championship in Paris by winning points over 15 rounds over Joseph Roude . On April 22, 1952 Jacques Hairabedian fought in London against ex-world champion Randy Turpin from England and had to feel the bitterness of a knockout defeat in the third round. After repeated victories over Albert Yvel on October 18, 1952 and January 24, 1953, each achieved in Istanbul , he received the chance to box for the European Championship on July 12, 1953 in Rome against Renato Tontini . Jacques Hairabedian won this fight over 15 rounds on points and became the new European light heavyweight champion.

On September 9, 1954, he defended this title in Hamburg against the German Gerhard Hecht and was defeated by this just on points. After that he resigned from boxing, suffering from injuries. He became a businessman in the transport industry and was involved in charities to support Armenian compatriots in need.
