Santo Amonti (born December 19, 1937 in Brescia , Lombardy ) is a former Italian boxer.

Career

Santo Amonti, known only as Sante Amonti in boxing circles, began boxing as a teenager in his hometown of Brescia. After a short amateur career, he became a professional boxer at the age of 19. At the beginning of his professional career he weighed approx. 80 kg and boxed in the light heavyweight division, later he rose to the heavyweight division, but with a body weight of approx. 85 kg always remained a "light" heavyweight. He was a powerful fighter who courageously accepted even the toughest opponents.

He played his first professional fight on May 21, 1957 in Brescia and came in the light heavyweight division to a knockout victory over a Manfred Heimann, whose nationality cannot be determined. He fought his first match abroad on October 18, 1957 in Hamburg against the German Erwin Hack, who at that time was already 10th in the European ranking of professional boxers in the light heavyweight division. He fought against this tie.

In the following two years, his boxing career was severely impaired by being drafted into the Italian military because he was no longer able to train regularly. Nevertheless, he was very successful and even became Italian light heavyweight champion on December 26, 1958 in Rome by a technical KO-Si9eg in the 11th round over Domenico Baccheschi. He defended this title on June 1, 1959 in Rome by winning points after 12 rounds over Rocco Mazzola .

On November 5, 1959, Santo Amonti got the chance in Dortmund against Erich Schöppner from Germany to fight for the European light heavyweight championship. Up to this point he had contested 31 fights, of which he had won 30. The fight against Erich Schöppner went in the Westfalenhalle over the full distance of 15 laps and ended with a narrow point win for Schöppner.

In January 1960 Santo Amonti was in the NBA world rankings in the light heavyweight division in 10th place and in the European rankings behind Erich Schöppner and in front of the British Chic Calderwood in second place.

On March 8, 1960 he lost his Italian light heavyweight championship at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome to Giulio Rinaldi . In this fight he was hit so hard on the head by Rinaldi in the first round that one eye swelled completely. The referee therefore did not let him compete in the 2nd round and declared Rinaldi the winner by technical knockout in the 2nd round.

Santo Amonti then switched to the heavyweight division and received on May 31, 1962 in Brescia in front of 16,000 spectators the chance to box against ex-European champion Franco Cavicchi for the Italian heavyweight championship title. He dominated this fight from the beginning and Cavicchi could only escape the hard blows of Santo Amonti by constantly holding and ducking. When he did not stop after repeated warnings from the referee, Cavicchi was disqualified in the 5th round and Santo Amonti was declared the new Italian heavyweight champion.

On July 7, 1962, Santo Amonti in Brescia also beat the English world ranking heavyweight Brian London over 10 rounds unanimously on points. On October 13, 1962 he successfully defended his Italian championship title in Rome with a technical knockout victory in the third round over Giacomo Bozzano . In 1963 he fought against top boxers in Brescia and Rome. On May 5, 1963 he scored in Rome against the American Wayne Bethea a draw and on September 13, he beat the British Joe Bygraves on points in Rome . A "high-light" in the career of Santo Amonte was the fight on January 6, 1964 in Stockholm against Floyd Patterson from the United States, even if he had to accept a technical knockout defeat in the 8th round. Floyd Patterson was the boxer who became the world's first heavyweight to break the unwritten law of "They Never Come Back".

On May 5, 1964, he defended his Italian championship title in Brescia with a points win over Piero Tomasoni . On October 17, 1964, he fought in Berlin against the German champion Karl Mildenberger for the vacant European heavyweight title. Santo Amonti suffered the worst defeat of his career in this fight, because he lost it in the 1st round by knockout. After this fight he was ranked 15th in the WBA world ranking of heavyweights.

In 1965 he successfully defended his Italian heavyweight title twice in Rome. On January 22, 1965, he defeated Benito Penna by technical knockout in the 8th round and on June 6, 1965 Giuseppe Migliari by technical knockout in the 10th round. On November 5, 1965, he then lost this title to Piero Tomasoni, who defeated him in the 9th round by knockout.

Santo Amonti played his last fight on August 2, 1967 in Los Angeles, in which he lost to the Mexican Manuel Ramos by technical knockout in the 10th round.
