Immediate Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Immediate Records was a short-lived British independent record label that existed between 1965 and 1970.

history

Andrew Loog Oldham , manager and music producer for the Rolling Stones , founded the label in August 1965 to give young talents a chance on the record market. It also concluded distribution agreements with US record labels. This is how the first single was released by Immediate Records when, on August 20, 1965, the American band McCoys entered the British market with their transatlantic hit Hang On Sloopy and the first success of the British charts with a 5th place in the British charts new labels could be booked. Conversely, in September 1967, CBS Records took over the American distribution rights for Immediate Records. In 1966 Immediate Records had two number one hits , Out of Time by Chris Farlowe (written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards ) and All or Nothing by Small Faces . He bought the Small Faces for the then sizeable sum of £ 25,000 from Decca Records, financed by his income from the Rolling Stones.

The label had artists such as Rod Stewart , PP Arnold , John Mayall , Savoy Brown , Small Faces , The Nice , Amen Corner and Chris Farlowe under contract. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards could be won as producers. Oldham continued to work as a manager of the Rolling Stones until they fired him in 1967. Immediate had great success with its label catalog beat bands and rock bands . When the concept album Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake by Small Faces reached first place in the British LP charts in May 1968 and sold over a million copies worldwide, the response was great - also because of the unusual record sleeve.

On March 18, 1970 Immediate Records was dissolved after the release of 28 albums and 82 singles due to bankruptcy. Significant doubts remained as to financial compliance, as some artists claimed never to have received royalties from the label . On October 31, 2001, Oldham sued the American subsidiary Immediate Records Inc. , which in 1999 acquired the rights to numerous record releases by the label between 1965 and 1970. In the February 2002 judgment of the London High Court of Justice , Oldham did not hold these rights and, as a loser, had to freeze £ 125,000 of his property.
