Career

Helmut Pfirrmann began as a teenager in 1947 when KSV 1884 Weinheim with the boxes . His father Karl Pfirrmann became the coach. After initial success in the Baden area, he managed to become German light heavyweight champion in 1950. He defeated Schmidt on points in the final.

In 1951, DABV sent Helmut Pfirrmann to the European Championships in Milan . He met the Italian Alfonsetti in the light heavyweight division in the round of 16. He lost this encounter on points and had to retire. Things went better for him at the German championship in 1951. He faced the Stuttgart Gruber in the final, whom he surely scored and thus won his second German championship title.

At the German championship in 1952, Helmut Pfirrmann competed in excellent form. He defeated Uwe Jansen from Hamburg safely on points in the semifinals and won the final over Karl Kistner from Nuremberg by breaking off in the 2nd round. He was injured so badly afterwards that he was out for a long time and was therefore unable to take part in the Olympic Games in Helsinki .

In 1953 he started again in the light heavyweight division at the European Championships in Warsaw . In the quarterfinals he defeated the Czechoslovak Prihoda on points. In the semifinals he met the high favorite Ulrich Nitzschke from Halle , whom he delivered a good fight, but was unanimously beaten on points. Ulrich Nitzschke then also became European champion . He was the first boxer from the GDR to win a title at an international championship. Helmut Pfirrmann could at least be happy about a bronze medal .

He traveled to the United States after this European Championship with a European selection. There were two comparative fights between the USA and Europe . In the first encounter in Chicago he lost to Butler on points and in the second encounter in St. Louis he suffered a defeat against Cox. On the return trip, the European selection in Dublin also fought against Ireland . In this encounter Helmut Pfirrmann was the point winner over the Irishman Duggan.

After Helmut Pfirrmann was injured again in the German championship in 1953, he defeated Erich Schöppner from Witten on points in the final battle of the German championship in 1954 and won his third DM title. Incidentally, Erich Schöppner was to become a really great boxer later. In 1955, Helmut Pfirrmann tried again to become German champion, especially since the European championships that year, in which he would have liked to take part, were held in Berlin . He met Erich Schöppner again in the final, who this time turned the tables and defeated Helmut Pfirrmann unanimously on points. That's why Erich Schöppner started in Berlin, who became European champion there by defeating Ulrich Nitzschke.

In 1956, Helmut Pfirrmann was again in the final battle at the German championship. Here he met Emil Willer from Leverkusen , a young, fresh boxer who won this final fight thanks to his superior physique. Helmut Pfirrmann was then no longer at the start in the all-German elimination for the Olympic Games in Melbourne .
