The Soviet Union took part in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul with a delegation of 481 athletes (319 men and 162 women) in 221 competitions in 27 sports. The nation took first place in the medal table with a total of 132 medals, the flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the wrestler Alexander Alexandrowitsch Karelin . It was the Soviet Union's last participation in the Olympic Games before its dissolution.
