Sergei Nikolajewitsch Litvinow ( Russian Сергей Николаевич Литвинов , English Sergey Litvinov ; born January 23, 1958 in Zukerowa Balka , Krasnodar Krai , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; † February 19, 2018 in Sochi , Russia ) was a hammer thrower for the Soviet Union started for Russia.
life and career
Shortly after his birth, Litvinov's family moved to Rostov-on-Don . He has been wrestling and football since childhood before coach Igor Timashkow, later Honored Coach of the USSR, brought him to the hammer throw on a permanent basis.
Litvinov won the gold medal in his discipline at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 with the Olympic record of 84.80 m, which is still valid today (2018) , after finishing second in the Olympic Games in 1980. Its start at the Olympic Games in 1984 fell victim to the Olympic boycott.
In 1983 and 1987 he was able to secure the hammer throw world championship. There is also a silver and a bronze medal at European championships. Litvinov set three world records in the course of his career, which his constant competitor Jurij Sedych exceeded each time. His personal best was 86.04 m, set up in 1986 in Dresden , his competition weight was 108 kg with a height of 1.80 m.
After his active career, he worked as a trainer in Russia and Germany. Of his 6 children (4 daughters, 2 sons), his son Sergei Sergejewitsch Litvinow was also known as a hammer thrower for Belarus , Germany and Russia , where he was trained by his father.
Litvinov was in a training base for the Russian national team in preparation for the season in Sochi-Adler in February 2018 . After training he was riding his bike when he suddenly fell off his bike and died despite emergency aid; Heart failure is suspected to be the cause of death .
