Paweł Fajdek (born June 4, 1989 in Świebodzice ) is a Polish hammer thrower . He holds the national record and is currently the most successful hammer thrower of the 2010s with four consecutive world championship titles and the 2016 European championship title.

Athletic career

Paweł Fajdek recorded his first international successes in 2008 at the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , where he took fourth place with a 6 kg hammer with a width of 75.31 m. The following year he took part in the U23 European Championships in Kaunas for the first time and reached eighth place with 68.70 m. In 2011 he won the U23 European Championships in Ostrava with a throw of 78.54 m and he also won the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen with 78.14 m. He also qualified for the first time to take part in the World Championships in Daegu , South Korea , where he finished eleventh with a width of 75.20 m in the final. He experienced a temporary setback at the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he was eliminated without a valid attempt in qualification .

In 2013 Fajdek successfully defended his title at the Student World Games in Kazan with 79.99 m. Shortly afterwards he celebrated his greatest success to date at the World Championships in Moscow , when he surprisingly won the gold medal in front of the favorite Krisztián Pars from Hungary with a personal best of 81.97 m . He then took part in the Francophonie games in Nice , where he won the third major event of the year with a throw of 78.28 m. The following year he took part in the European Championships in Zurich for the first time and won the silver medal there with 82.05 m behind the defending champion Krisztián Pars from Hungary. He then came third at the Continental Cup in Ostrava with 78.05 m behind Pars and the Egyptian Mostafa el-Gamel . In 2015 he celebrated winning his third gold medal in a row at the Summer Universiade in Gwangju with 80.05 m and then set a new best at a meeting in Szczecin at home with 83.93 m, placing him in tenth place on the all-time world best list (As of March 2020). He then took part in the World Championships in Beijing , where he repeated his success from 2013 with a throw at 80.88 m in the final , thus securing the gold medal ahead of the Tajik Dilschod Nazarow . The following year he was crowned European champion for the first time at the European Championships in Amsterdam with a width of 80.93 m. This made him the big favorite for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where, surprisingly, he did not go beyond qualifying with 72.00 m .

In 2017 he lived up to his role as a favorite at the World Championships in London and won the final there with a width of 79.81 m for the third time in a row, making him the first hammer thrower to succeed. Just two weeks later he celebrated another success at the Student World Games in Taipei by winning the fourth gold medal. There he carried the hammer to 79.16 m. The following year he had to admit defeat to his compatriot Wojciech Nowicki at the European Championships in Berlin with 78.69 m and thus won the silver medal. In 2019 he won the World Championships in Doha with 80.50 m in the final and thus secured his fourth World Championship title in a row.

Fajdek is also extremely successful on a national level and secured the Polish hammer throw titles in 2012, from 2014 to 2016 and 2019. In the hall he started second white in weight throwing .

Trivia

The day after winning the gold medal at the 2015 World Championships, the media reported that he had paid for the taxi ride to the hotel with the gold medal while drunk after the victory ceremony. With the help of the Chinese police, he later got it back. Fajdek decidedly denied this report - he just forgot the medal in the taxi.
