The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC for short) is a non-profit organization that was founded in June 1997 as the registry for the country-specific top-level domain .cn .

history

In February 2003, the award criteria were liberalized so that domains could since then be registered directly on the second level, whereas previously this was only possible below a second-level domain such as .com.cn or .org.cn . In December of the previous year, the written registration in paper form was converted to an electronic procedure in order to accelerate the connection. In the period that followed, the number of registered .cn domains rose to over 700,000 addresses, with reports of a tightening of censorship increasing. For example, it is forbidden to register domains with the intention of harming the government with the information offered under them or, for example, to provide pornographic content.

meaning

The top-level domain .cn has recorded double-digit growth rates for years. By lowering the fees, the number of registered .cn domains rose by 400 percent in 2006 to 2007. In 2008 there were a total of 14 million .cn domains, so .cn was the most popular country ending before .de and .uk . In the following years, however, due to several changes in the award criteria, the spread fell rapidly, to around four million domains in September 2012. Among other things, it was not possible to obtain domains from foreign registrars from 2009 to 2012. Private individuals were also prohibited from owning .cn domains. Recently, the number of registrations has stabilized again, in 2012 there were again more .cn than .eu domains.
