The weight throw (English: weight throw) is a traditional Scottish sport and an integral part of the heavy events on the occasion of the Highland Games . The aim of this discipline is to throw the weight as far as possible from a defined drop zone.

According to the rules of the International Highland Games Federation (IHGF), the men at the heavy events of the Highland Games with a weight of 25.4 kg (56 pounds) and 12.7 kg (28 pounds) and the women with a weight of 12, 7 kg (28 pounds) and 6.35 kg (14 pounds). Lighter weights are also used on other occasions (42 lb).

The spherical or rectangular throwing device is made of metal. A handle (triangular, round or "D" shape) is attached to it on a chain. The height of the throwing device, including the handle and chain, must not exceed 45.72 cm (18 inches).

The weight is thrown with one hand from a rectangular drop zone. The athlete is not allowed to step over the delimitation bar of the throwing zone. Weight throwing is a technically demanding discipline that requires a high level of coordination and enormous speed. Typically, a twist-throwing technique is used to fling the weight as far as possible. Each athlete has three attempts, the furthest of which counts for the scoring.

In 1904 and 1920 , weight throwing (25.4 kg) was a discipline of the Summer Olympics .
