history

Massed Pipe Band 2009

The "wùy ù ay" Highland Games Swiss Championships have been an annual event since 2003 in St. Ursen , a small community in the Friborg Prealps. What started as a small event with 1,500 visitors has now turned into a national event with over 18,000 visitors.

After 17 strong athletes competed in the "Heavy Events" in the first year, up to 60 athletes are now trying their hand at the weights. In addition, in 2006 a Swiss female champion was chosen in sports competition for the first time. Many of the successful participants and winners of the “Heavy Events” are well-known Steinstösser (Markus Maire, Daniel Bächler, Peter Michel, Roland Stählin and others).

In addition to the sporting program, the 2004 Highland Games were supplemented with the Pipe Band and Solo Competitions, which are unique in Switzerland. More than half of the Swiss pipe bands now take part in the Swiss Pipe Band Championships.

Heavy events

Stone throwing

Steinstossen 2009 - Peter Michel

The start of the sporting competitions at the Highland Games is the stone throwing. The 15.9 kg (women 7.5 kg) heavy lump is to be pushed as far as possible with one hand and close to the neck until it is released. The run-up is a maximum of 2.3 m, whereby the discharge bar must not be crossed. The athletes have three attempts at which the longest shot is counted. The best distance ever reached at the Highland Games Swiss Championships, which is not counted as a Swiss record, was achieved by the German athlete Andreas Deuschle in 2012 with 9.67 m.

In this competition, a stone weighing 25.4 kg (women 12.7 kg) is connected to a retaining ring by a short chain. Similar to throwing a discus, the weight is thrown out of a throwing area (2.5 m × 1.5 m) with 1 to 2 body turns. The furthest of the three attempts counts for the evaluation.

Throwing a tree trunk

Tree trunk throwing 2009 - Daniel Schmocker

Throwing logs is the supreme discipline of the Highland Games. You can only become Swiss champions if you manage to knock over the tree trunk, which is around five meters long and weighs around 42 kilograms (3.5 m and 20 kg for women) in accordance with the rules. The goal is not to throw the log as far or as high as possible, but to flip it over so that it lies in a straight line at the dropping position (12 o'clock position). In accordance with the enormous effort, most points can be won in this discipline.

Pipe band competition

Pipe Band Competition 2009 - The Pipes and Drums of the Lucerne Caledonians

In this competition, bagpipe formations compete against each other. A pipe band consists of at least 6 whistlers, 2 snare drummers and a timpanist. Four 2/4 MAP marches are played in the “compulsory program”. The players march together to the starting line with their instruments pointing downwards. You have to wear Scottish costume and follow the instructions of your pipe major: "Attention, get ready, ready, by the right, quick march". The evaluation of the musical performance begins with the first stroke of the drum roll. The formations can orientate themselves on a drawn circle with a diameter of 7 meters. It is located 14 meters from the start line. The Scottish judges assess the performances according to the following criteria: "Intro, sound, musical performance, integration and ensemble". Both the individual performances and the group competitions are supervised by the Pipe Band Association of Switzerland and are assessed by accredited adjudicators of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.
