Weight throwing
The weight throw (English: weight over the bar or weight for height) is a traditional Scottish sport. This discipline is an integral part of the heavy events on the occasion of the Highland Games .
The weight has to be catapulted over a measuring stick with just one hand. The athletes set the bar individually. If the athlete remains unsuccessful after three attempts, he is eliminated from the competition. If several athletes fail at the same altitude, the one with the fewest failed attempts wins.
According to the rules of the International Highland Games Federation (IHGF), the men at the Heavy Events of the Highland Games throw a weight of 25.4 kg (56 pounds) and the women throw a weight of 12.7 kg (28 pounds). Lighter weights are also used on other occasions (42 lb).
The spherical or rectangular throwing device is made of metal and has a handle (triangular, round or D-shape). The height of the throwing device including the handle must not be more than 45.72 cm (18 inches).
To throw, the athlete picks up the weight with one hand and swings it between his legs and then throws it upwards with a swing over the specified height. Two-handed swinging is not allowed.
