(5283) Pyrrhus is an asteroid belonging to the group of Jupiter Trojans . This describes asteroids that move around the sun on the Lagrange points on Jupiter's orbit .

(5283) Pyrrhus was discovered on January 31, 1989 by the American astronomer Carolyn Jean Spellmann Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory . It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L 4 .

The asteroid is named after the mythological figure of Neoptolemus , the son of Achilles , who is called Pyrrhus in the Aeneid because of his hair color . After the death of his father he fought in the Trojan War and killed Priam , King of Troy .
