Wojciech Nowicki (born February 22, 1989 in Białystok ) is a Polish athlete who specializes in hammer throwing. He won several medals at world championships and has been the reigning European champion since 2018.

Athletic career

Wojciech Nowicki gained his first international experience in 2011 at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava , where he took fifth place with a width of 72.20 m. Two years later he took part in the Summer Universiade in Kazan and also reached fifth place there with 75.32 m. In 2015 he qualified for the World Championships in Beijing for the first time and made it straight to the finals , surprisingly winning the bronze medal with a throw at 78.55 m behind his compatriot Paweł Fajdek and the Tajik Dilschod Nasarow . In the following year he also secured the bronze medal at the European Championships in Amsterdam with 77.53 m behind fellow countryman Fajdek and Belarusian Iwan Zichan . He also qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he won his third bronze medal in a row at major international events with 77.73 m in the final, this time behind Nazarov and Zichan.

In 2017 Nowicki became Polish champion for the first time when he surprisingly prevailed against the favored Fajdek in Białystok. He then won the bronze medal at the World Championships in London, just like two years earlier in Beijing, with a width of 78.03 m in the final behind Fajdek and the Russian Valeri Pronkin, who competed as a neutral athlete . In the following year he was crowned European champion for the first time at the European Championships in Berlin with a width of 80.12 m in front of his compatriot Fajdek and was then sixth at the Continental Cup in Ostrava with 71.74 m. Because of his European title, he received a bye for the World Championships in Doha in 2019 , where he won the bronze medal for the third time in a row. He had only achieved the fourth best distance in the competition, but successfully appealed because of an unrecognized invalid throw by Bence Halász , who was placed in front of him . He received the medal retrospectively, but Halász was also allowed to keep his medal. He then won in mid-October at the World Military Games in Wuhan with a width of 77.38 m.

In 2017 and 2018 Nowicki was the Polish hammer throw champion. He is a graduate of the Białystok Technical University ( Politechnika Białostocka ). He was trained by Bogumił Chlebiński until 2012 and has been coached by Malwina Sobierajska since then .
