Valeri Pronkin has competed in national championships since 2010, back then not only with the hammer but also with the discus. In 2011 he took part in the U18 World Championships in Lille , both in discus and hammer throw. In the discus he took tenth place in the final with 56.39 m with a throwing weight of 1.5 kg, and ninth place after qualifying with the 5-kilo hammer 66.06 m, which was not enough for the final. Also in July he threw the hammer with 77.90 m at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Trabzon , which meant fourth place there.
At the U20 World Championships in Barcelona in 2012 , now with a throwing weight of 6 kg, Pronkin threw 74.51 m in the final and finished eighth. A year later he was able to improve significantly and threw in the final of the U20 European Championships in Rieti 78.34 m, which brought him the European title. In 2014 he then entered competitions in the adult area, with a casting weight of 7.26 kg. He qualified for the 2015 U23 European Championships in Tallinn . There he threw 74.29 m and won the silver medal.
In November, in the wake of the scandal surrounding the systematic state doping, the Russian association, RusAF, was banned, which is why the athletes have not been allowed to compete as Russian teams in international competitions since then. Pronkin has been competing for the Authorized Neutral Athletes since 2017 . As it became known in July 2017, he was one of 19 Russian athletes who were allowed to participate in the World Championships in London. At the end of July 2017 Pronkin achieved its best length (as of 2019) of 79.32 m, which is still valid today. A month later he was able to record his greatest sporting success to date with winning the silver medal at the World Championships in London .
