World Champion Paweł Fajdek, Poland
Dilschod Nazarow from Tajikistan finished seventh

final

August 11, 2017, 8:30 p.m. local time (9:30 p.m. CEST )

Among the favorites for this competition mainly included the world champion of 2013 / 2015 , Vice European Champion in 2016 and European champion in 2016 Paweł Fajdek from Poland, the Olympic champion in 2016 and runner-up of 2015 Dilshod Nazarov from Tajikistan, the Pole Wojciech Nowicki as Olympic third of 2016, World Cup third from 2015 and EM third from 2016 as well as the Hungarian Olympic champion from 2012 , vice world champion from 2013 and European champion from 2014 Krisztián Pars. However, Pars had already failed in the qualification, he was missing 33 centimeters there for the final.

In the first round, the Frenchman Quentin Bigot 77.05 m was enough to lead. Valery Pronkin, who started under a neutral flag, was second with 77.00 m. In lap two, too, no thrower exceeded the 78-meter mark. Alexei Sokirski, who also started under a neutral flag, took the lead with 77.50 m. Nasarow was enough 77.22 m for second place, Pronkin, who improved to 77.20 m, was third. With his first valid attempt, Fajdek reached 77.09 m and was fourth ahead of Bigot. In round three there were further slight increases. Fajdek was the new leader with 79.73 m, Nowicki improved to second place with 78.03 m, Sokirski was now third, Bigot threw 77.46 m, which meant fourth place. British rider Nick Miller improved to fifth place with 77.31 m. Nasarow and Pronkin fell back to positions six and seven, respectively.

In lap four, Bigot first rose to bronze with 77.67 m. Fajdek improved his lead to 79.81 m, otherwise everything remained unchanged. In the penultimate round, the initially leading Pronkin ousted the French again with 77.98 m. Pronkin was now third, Bigot fourth. In the last series of experiments there was another change. Valery Pronkin had now obviously gained a really good foothold and climbed again to 78.16 m, which finally brought him the silver medal. Pawel Fajdek, who threw more than 79 meters three times, became a deserved world champion. Wojciech Nowicki won bronze, Quentin Bigot came fourth ahead of Alexei Sokirski Nick Miller. Co-favorite Dilschod Nazarow had to be satisfied with seventh place. The Moldovan Serghei Marghiev took eighth place. The gaps from second to seventh place were very close overall. The Second Pronkin was less than three feet from the Seventh Nazarov.

The level of distances in hammer throw had decreased significantly compared to previous years - a trend that was also evident at the Olympic Games a year ago. For the first time in many years, the high point of the year at the Games in 2016 and now again at the World Championships, the 80-meter mark was not exceeded, which Fajdek managed to do at the European Championships in 2016. What role the exclusion of Russian athletes, which is not without exception, or a modified doping control system will play here remains at least initially speculative.
