From the circle of favorites the Czech sticking world record holder , two-time Olympic champion - 2008 / 2012 , world champion in 2009 and European champion of 2014 Barbora Špotáková something out. But she had to reckon with strong competitors. First of all there was the German world champion from 2015 Katharina Molitor, who did not start in her strong form from 2015. As the 2016 Olympic champion , Croatian Sara Kolak, who was also there, surprised. The 2015 vice world champion Lü Huihui was also one of the favorites, as was the reigning European champion Tazzjana Chaladowitsch from Belarus.

Lap one did not bring great distances yet, with 63.04 m Chaladowitsch was leading. That changed in the second round. Špotáková achieved the new top distance with 66.76 m. Three female throwers now exceeded the 64 mark. Kolak was second with 64.95 m in front of the Turkish Eda Tuğsuz - 64.52 m - and Chaladowitsch - 64.05 m. Molitor was fifth with 63.75 m. In the third series of tests, the Chinese Li Lingwei climbed to 66.25 m, was second and displaced all throwers who had been in front of her by one place.

In the three finals of the top eight that followed, not much happened. However, there was still one important change. Co-favorite Lü Huihui took bronze with 65.26 m. This was the second time that Barbora Špotáková was world champion ahead of the Chinese Li Lingwei. Olympic champion Sara Kolak came fourth ahead of Eda Tuğsuz. European champion Tazzjana Chaladowitsch finished sixth, defending champion Katharina Molitor finished seventh.
