Kara Estelle Winger (* 10. April 1986 in Seattle as Kara Patterson ) is an American javelin thrower . She has held the US record in javelin throw since 2010 with 66.67 m.

Life

She attended Alki Middle School in Seattle until 1999 and Skyview High School until 2004. At Purdue University she made in 2009 with a degree in food sciences ( nutrition, fitness and health ). She has been married to the shot putter Russell Winger since September 2014 .

She began throwing javelins when she was in ninth grade, on the recommendation of her geography teacher. She has been trained by Ty Sevin since 2010.

Athletic career

Kara Winger gained her first international experience in 2005 at the Pan American Junior Championships in Edmonton , where she won the silver medal with a width of 50.26 m. Two years later she qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Beijing , in which she did not reach the final with 54.39 m . Also at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin , she was eliminated with 52.71 m in qualification, as well as at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, with 57.14 m. In 2012 she again took part in the Olympic Games in London , but this time too, with 56.23 m, she did not make it to the final . In 2014 she reached seventh place with 52.22 m at the IAAF Continental Cup in Marrakech and in 2015 she won the silver medal behind Canadian Elizabeth Gleadle at her first Pan American Games in Toronto with a throw of 61.44 m . She then won the NACAC Championships in San José with 60.34 m and also qualified for the World Championships in Beijing, where she finished eighth with 60.88 m in the final .

In 2016 she was eliminated at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro for the third time with 61.02 m in qualification and at the 2017 World Athletics Championships in London, 61.27 m were not enough for a final . In 2018 she was third at the IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava with 60.38 m and in 2019 she won the Pan American Games in Lima with 64.92 m. At the beginning of October she reached the finals at the World Championships in Doha and was fifth there with a width of 63.23 m.

From 2008 to 2011, 2014 and 2015, as well as 2017 and 2018, Winger was the US javelin thrower.
