American hurdlers had triumphed at the last major athletics events. Aries Merrit was the 2012 Olympic champion , David Oliver the 2013 world champion . Both were back here in Beijing and were among the favorites. Also the Olympic third in 2012 Hansle Parchment from Jamaica as well as the Russian World Cup third in 2013 and European champion in 2014 Sergej Schubenkow were medal candidates .

Three French had qualified for the final. There were also two US Americans, two Jamaicans and one Russian.

The Jamaican Omar McLeod came off the starting blocks best. The Frenchman Dimitri Bascou and Merritt were also well in the race from the start, while Oliver had no chance of being at the front after a slight stumble at the second hurdle. At the halfway point of the race, Schubenkow got better and better. He was now storming towards the goal as the leader and could no longer be stopped. Behind him, Parchment was also very fast for the last fifty yards. That was the finish line of Sergei Schubenkow, who set a new national record in 12.98 s, ahead of Hansle Parchment, who was second, five hundredths of a second behind. Aries Merritt was third, just two hundredths of a second behind Parchment. Fourth and fifth places went to the Frenchmen Pascal Martinot-Lagarde and Dimitri Bascou. Omar McLeod was sixth ahead of David Oliver and third French Garfield Darien.
