Garfield Darien (born December 22, 1987 in Lyon ) is a French hurdler who specializes in the 110-meter hurdles . His father Daniel Darien , who trains him, was also a successful hurdler. Garfield Darien is 1.87 m tall and has a competition weight of 76 kg. He starts for EA Chambéry .

Career

Internationally, Darien made his first appearance when he finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles at the 2004 Junior World Championships in Athletics in Grosseto at the age of only 17. The following year he secured the gold medal at the Junior European Championships in Kaunas .

After Darien, who was considered prone to injury, had become quiet over the next two years, he returned in 2008 by winning the 110 meter hurdles title at the French Junior Championships. In 2009 he was nominated junior champion in the 60 meter hurdles in the hall and for the European Indoor Championships in Turin . There he came in sixth place. In the 110-meter hurdles of the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, he reached the semi-finals. At the 2010 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Doha, he was eliminated from over 60 meter hurdles in the preliminary run.

Darien's international breakthrough came at the 2010 European Athletics Championships in Barcelona. In the final of the 110-meter hurdles, he increased his personal best to 13.34 s and thus won the silver medal behind the Briton Andrew Turner (13.28 s) and ahead of the Hungarian Dániel Kiss (13.39 s). In the following month he managed to set his best performance twice. He secured another silver medal with 7.56 s in the 60-meter hurdles at the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2011 in Paris behind the Czech Petr Svoboda (7.49 s) and ahead of the Belgian Adrien Deghelt (7.57 s). He missed participation in the World Championships in Daegu due to an injury.

At the European Championships in 2012 , Darien achieved a personal best over 110 meter hurdles with 13.15 seconds. In the final he finished second in 13.20 seconds behind the Russian Sergei Schubenkow (13.16 seconds) and won the silver medal again like two years earlier in Barcelona. After mononucleosis put him out of action in 2013 , he started the season in 2014 with strong performances over 60 meter hurdles and qualified for participation in the World Indoor Championships in Sopot . In a personal best of 7.47 s, he won the bronze medal there behind the American Omo Osaghae (7.45 s) and his compatriot Pascal Martinot-Lagarde (7.46 s). At the European Athletics Indoor Championships 2017 , Darien finished fourth with a time of 7.54 seconds.
