Pascal Martinot-Lagarde (born September 22, 1991 in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés ) is a French athlete who specializes in hurdles . With a time of 12.95 seconds, he holds the French record in the 110-meter hurdles . His older brother Thomas is also a successful hurdler.

Athletic career

In 2009 Martinot-Lagarde was the French junior champion in the 60-meter hurdles and vice junior champion in the 110-meter hurdles. At the Junior European Championships in Novi Sad , he finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.
At the 2010 Junior World Championships in Moncton, Canada, he secured the title in 13.52 seconds. In the 2011 season he achieved no results worth mentioning due to injury.

The year 2012 started promisingly for Martinot-Lagarde. He became French indoor champion over 60 meter hurdles and won the bronze medal at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul behind the American Aries Merritt and the Chinese Liu Xiang . In May, however, threw him back a thigh injury, so that he missed the qualification for the European Championships in Helsinki as well as for the Olympic Games in London .

In 2013, Martinot-Lagarde successfully defended his national championship title in the 60-meter hurdles. At the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg he was third behind the Russian Sergei Schubenkow and the Italian Paolo Dal Molin . Started the season with a personal best of 13.41 seconds over 110 meter hurdles, he climbed to 13.12 seconds, run at the Areva meeting in Paris at the beginning of July . At the World Championships in Moscow , however, he was eliminated with 13.63 seconds in the run-up.

The 2014 season started again for Martinot-Lagarde with strong performances in the hall. In the 60-meter hurdles he improved to 7.45 seconds, was again French champion and won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Sopot behind the American Omo Osaghae . In the open air it was much better than in previous years. He won over 110 meter hurdles at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, the Bislett Games in Oslo and the Athletissima in Lausanne. He was also the first French champion in this discipline. In his victory at the Herculis in Monaco, he achieved a time of 12.95 seconds and thus undercut the French record of Ladji Doucouré by two hundredths of a second. As a result, he traveled to the European Championships in Zurich as a favorite , but fell short of expectations with third place in 13.29 seconds. Originally he was only fourth, but moved up to bronze after the disqualification of his compatriot Dimitri Bascou .

Martinot-Lagarde at the European Indoor Championships 2015

At the 2015 European Indoor Championships in Prague, Martinot-Lagarde won the 60 meter hurdles in 7.49 seconds ahead of his compatriots Bascou and Wilhem Belocian . His start into the outdoor season was also very successful. At the Prefontaine Classic he won the world’s annual best of 13.06 seconds ahead of the Olympic champion Aries Merritt. He also finished second at the London Grand Prix behind former world champion Jason Richardson from the United States. At the World Championships in Beijing , he finished fourth and thus missed a medal.

In 2016, Martinot-Lagarde won the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Portland, just like two years earlier in Sopot. He only had to admit defeat to the eventual Olympic champion Omar McLeod from Jamaica. In the open air season it produced changeable results. After finishing sixth at the Prefontaine Classic, he was second again on the podium at the Golden Gala in Rome. At the French championships in Angers, on the other hand, he only achieved a disappointing sixth place after a mistake on the seventh hurdle. He achieved his season best with 13.17 seconds in third place at Herculis. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he finished fourth in 13.29 seconds.

In 2017, Martinot-Lagarde won the silver medal behind the Briton Andrew Pozzi at the European Athletics Indoor Championships over 60 meter hurdles . An injury to the metatarsal bone forced him to skip the rest of the season. At the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, he finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles. He celebrated his most important international success to date by winning the title at the European Championships in Berlin . In the final over the 110 meter hurdles, he prevailed against the favorite Sergei Schubenkow from Russia with a lead of only two thousandths of a second .

In 2019 Martinot-Lagarde won the silver medal in the 60-meter hurdles at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow . At the World Championships in Doha , he won the bronze medal over the 110 meter hurdles behind the American Grant Holloway and the Russian Sergei Schubenkow , who started under a neutral flag .
