Guy Drut

Guy Drut (born December 6, 1950 in Oignies ) is a French Olympic champion in athletics and politician.

Drut was one of the world's best hurdles in the 1970s. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he won the silver medal behind Rodney Milburn from the USA over 110 m hurdles in 13.34 seconds . The 1974 European champion then won the gold medal in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal in 13.30 seconds.

From 1974 to 1976 he was chosen three times by the sports newspaper L'Équipe as France's Sportsman of the Year (“ Champion des champions ”).

Guy Drut was a member of the IOC from 1996 to 2005 . That year, a French court sentenced him to a suspended prison sentence of 15 months for accepting funds to represent political interests. As a result, the IOC suspended him. In a controversial action , President Jacques Chirac pardoned him in 2006.

After his active career, Drut became politically active and served as youth and sports minister in the conservative government of Alain Juppé from 1995 to 1997. In 2002 he was elected to the national assembly as a member of the Union pour un mouvement populaire in the Seine-et-Marne department belonged to parliament until 2007. He was followed by Franck Riester as MP .
