Sergei Wladimirowitsch Schubenkow ( Russian Сергей Владимирович Шубенков , English transcription Sergey Vladimirovich Shubenkov; born October 10, 1990 in Barnaul , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a Russian athlete who specializes in the 110-meter hurdle .
Career
Schubenkow appeared internationally for the first time in 2009 at the European Athletics Junior Championships in Novi Sad when he won the silver medal in the 110-meter hurdles. In 2010 he was fourth in the 60 meter hurdles at the Russian indoor championships and third in the 110 meter hurdles at the Russian outdoor championships.
Schubenkow won the gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava . In the same year he took part in the World Championships in Daegu , but was eliminated in the run-up.
In 2012, Schubenkow improved the Russian record for the 110 meter hurdles in Hérouville-Saint-Clair to 13.18 s and undercut Konstantin Schabanow's old record by 17 hundredths of a second. Schubenkow celebrated his greatest international success to date with winning the title at the European Championships in Helsinki . After he had increased his best performance in the semifinals to 13.09 s, in the final 13.16 s were enough for him to win ahead of French Garfield Darien and Poland's Artur Noga . At the Olympic Games in London Schubenkow reached the semi-finals.
In February 2013, Schubenkow became the Russian champion in the 60-meter hurdles. Two weeks later he won the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg over the same distance and with a time of 7.49 seconds he has now topped the world best of the year. In July he won the bronze medal in the 110 meter hurdles at the Universiade in Kazan in 13.47 seconds. A few weeks later he also finished third at the World Championships in Moscow in 13.24 seconds.
In 2014 Schubenkow prevailed again at the Russian championships over 60 meter hurdles, but was eliminated in the semifinals of the 2014 indoor world championships in Sopot, Poland. At the European Championships in Zurich , he successfully defended his title in the 110-meter hurdles in 13.16 s.
In 2015, Schubenkow won the Golden Gala in Rome and the European Team Championship in Cheboksary . At the Areva meeting in Paris Saint Denis he took third place and increased his best performance to 13.06 seconds. He crowned his season by winning the title at the World Championships in Beijing , where he broke the 13-second mark for the first time with his winning time of 12.98 s.
In 2018 he improved his personal best to 12.92 seconds at the Gyulai Memorial Meeting in Székesfehérvár . Schubenkow won silver at the World Championships in London in 2017 and in Doha in 2019 .
At the World Championships in Doha , Schubenkow, who started under a neutral flag, won the silver medal over the 110 meter hurdles on October 2, 2019, behind the American Grant Holloway .
Sergei Schubenkow is 1.90 m tall, has a competition weight of 75 kg and is trained by Sergej Klewzow. His mother Natalja Schubenkowa was vice European champion in 1986 and won the 1988 Olympic heptathlon .
