Hérouville-Saint-Clair is a commune in the French region of Normandy in the department of Calvados . With 22,954 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), it is the third largest city in the department and has seen a significant increase in population since the early 1960s. The city belongs to the arrondissement of Caen .
Hérouville-Saint-Clair is located on the western bank of the Orne in the immediate north of Caen . Until 1957 the place was simply called Hérouville . Hérouville is connected to Caen by Line B of the TVR Caen . Many districts of Hérouville are particularly noticeable for their contemporary architecture. The basic idea here was decentralized urbanization, with the individual districts being given small shopping centers to underline their independence. Only at the end of the 1980s was an urban city center created.
