Éterville is a French commune with 1631 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Calvados department in the Normandy region . It belongs to the arrondissement of Caen and the canton of Caen-5 . The inhabitants are called Étervillais .
geography
The parish of Éterville is two kilometers from the left bank of the Orne and about eight kilometers southwest of Caen city center . The district of Le Rocroil belongs to Éterville . The municipality is surrounded by Bretteville-sur-Odon in the north, Louvigny in the northeast, Fleury-sur-Orne in the east, Maltot in the south, Fontaine-Étoupefour in the west and Verson in the northwest.
history
Éterville was fought over in 1944. Shortly after the landing in Normandy on D-Day (June 6, 1944), the Allies tried to take the city of Caen , which Hitler had declared a "fortress" ( Battle of Caen ). As part of Operation Jupiter (July 10th and 11th) there was fighting at or in Éterville. On the night of July 11-12, battalions of the Canadian 4th Infantry Brigade captured Éterville and Verson . Hill 112, a hotly contested hill at the time, is located near Éterville .
