In 1909 August Thyssen built a steel mill here. Out of the interest in the French iron ore, he committed himself to the French government to smelt 60% of the ore in France and to bring the rest to the Ruhr area. With the First World War, the plant was requisitioned and continued from 1917 by the Société métallurgique de Normandie (SMN) until it was closed in 1993.
