Bénouville is a French commune with 2049 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the canton of Ouistreham in the department of Calvados in the Normandy region . It is located about ten kilometers northeast of the city of Caen . The Canal de Caen à la Mer , which is spanned by the Pegasus Bridge , runs near Bénouville .

On July 15, 1892, the narrow-gauge railway connection from Bénouville to Dives was opened. Just four weeks later, trains were also running from Benouville via Ouistreham to Luc , and on July 4, 1893, the tracks of what would later become the Chemins de fer du Calvados up to the Saint-Pierre station in Caen went into operation. After destruction as a result of the fighting in World War II in 1944, the railway was shut down.

During the Second World War, the Pegasus Bridge and the surrounding area, including Bénouville , were captured and occupied by Allied troops of the British 6th Airborne Division , which landed in Normandy during Operation Tonga . Some of the Allied soldiers during the operation fell are buried in the nearby at the Church of Bénouville cemetery.
