Dives-sur-Mer is a French municipality with 5546 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy . Dives-sur-Mer belongs to the Arrondissement Lisieux and is the most populous place in the canton of Cabourg . The inhabitants are called Divais .
geography
The eponymous river Dives forms the western boundary of the municipality . Dives-sur-Mer is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Houlgate in the east, Gonneville-sur-Mer , Grangues in the southeast, Périers-en-Auge in the south and Cabourg in the west.
The small port of Dives-sur-Mer flows into the English Channel after a few meters . However, the municipality of Dives-sur-Mer does not extend to the coast, so that it can only be considered a place of the Côte Fleurie to a limited extent . However, the place is popular with tourists because of its historical and urban significance.
history
In 858 the Vikings settled here in order to carry out their raids inland. A Christian miracle is said to have been wrought here as early as 1001. The legend of the church's foundation is based on this.
From the port of Dives, William the Conqueror transferred his fleet to England in 1066.
Until 1897 the place was still called Dives , since then it has been added sur-Mer .

Community partnerships
Dives-sur-Mer has had a partnership with the German municipality of Oberkochen in Baden-Württemberg since 1984 . Before 1989 there was a city partnership with Hettstedt (Saxony-Anhalt)

- Notre-Dame church, Romanesque religious building from the 11th century, monument historique since 1888 , on the outer wall there is a plaque with 475 names of fighters who translated with William the Conqueror for the battle of Hastings
