history
In 1078 the name Matervilla appears in the Chartular of the Trinity Monastery of Caen. In 1278 the Merravilla was named; in the course of time it eventually became Merville . Franceville was the name of a private housing estate that was expanded into a seaside resort in 1898. By a decree of the President Gaston Doumergue on February 11, 1931, the two places were united to Merville-Franceville-Plage .
During the invasion of Normandy in June 1944, the place was the scene of the fighting for the local German artillery position . A stele at the former German position commemorates these events.
