Orbec is a municipality with 2013 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the French region of Normandy in the Calvados department . Orbec is the main town ( chief lieu ) of the canton of the same name, Livarot .

history

Orbec was a Norman fiefdom owned by the Clare family , a branch of the Rollonids , in the 11th and 12th centuries . The most important owner was Richard de Bienfaite († 1090), who was temporarily regent of England. At the end of the 12th century Orbec got by marriage to William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke . When Normandy was conquered by King Philip II Augustus , it fell to France in 1204. Until the French Revolution (1789–1799) Orbec was an influential city, the seat of a Vicomté and a Bailliage , whose jurisdiction was the larger cities of Lisieux and Bernay . In 1790 the administration of the region was transferred to Lisieux.
