Ignacio Ramonet (born May 5, 1943 in Redondela , Spain ) is a Spanish journalist and media scientist . He is Honorary President of Attac and co-organizer of the World Social Forum .

Life

Ignacio Ramonet spent his youth in Tangier . He studied engineering and sociology in Bordeaux , Rabat and Paris. He received his doctorate from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in semiotics . He has been working in France since 1972.

Ramonet teaches audiovisual communication theory at the Denis-Diderot University in Paris . From 1991 to March 2008 he was director of the Paris monthly newspaper for international politics, Le Monde diplomatique . Since then he has headed the Spanish edition of this newspaper.

The leading article “Désarmer les marchés” - “Disarm the markets” - published in Le Monde diplomatique in December 1997 brought the Attac movement into being, which is critical of globalization. The reason was the financial crisis that broke out this year in Southeast Asia. Ramonet traced this back in his article to the previously detached currency speculation wave. He attacked the dominance of the financial markets and the unrestricted flow of capital and described them as a threat to democracy and the stability of states. Ramonet called for the establishment of a "worldwide organization that should work to raise a Tobin tax for the benefit of the people". The abbreviation Attac arose from the French name of this organization, "Association pour une taxation des transactions financières pour l´aide aux citoyens" .
