Cambes-en-Plaine is a French commune with 1,722 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy .

geography

The municipality is located on the northern outskirts of Caen , around eight kilometers from the city.

Neighboring municipalities of Cambes-en-Plaine are Anisy in the north, Mathieu in the northeast, Biéville-Beuville in the east, Épron in the southeast, Saint-Contest in the southwest and Villons-les-Buissons in the west.

history

The village was first mentioned in the 10th century. The village was dominated by the castle of the ruling family Mathan , which no longer exists . A descendant of the family became Napoleon's chamberlain . In the 19th century a factory opened to sell alcohol made from sugar beet to Le Havre . In 1945 it was closed. During the Battle of Normandy in 1944, 80 percent of the village was destroyed. The reconstruction took fifteen years.
