history
Cormelles-le-Royal is named in a document from 1195 Cormellae juxta Cadonum , Latin for "Cormellae near Caen". In 1281 it was mentioned as Cormeiles . It is believed that the name by planting Sorbus domestica (fr. Cormier ) was created. The city has had the privilege of calling itself le-Royal ("the royal one") since 1353. During the French Revolution , the addition le-Royal was removed from the name in 1789 and the city was renamed Cormelles-le-Libre . In 1793 it was simply called Cormelles and in 1801 even Coronelles was in use. It was not until 1969 that the city was called Cormelles-le-Royal again .
In the 18th century, during the reign of Louis XV. , the de la Guérinière family moved to Cormelles-le-Royal and had a manor house and riding arena built there. The property was named after the La Guérinère family . The manor house and riding arena were used as a branch of the académie d'équitation (Caen Riding Academy) until the French Revolution and closed in 1795.
In 1905 La Guérinière was converted into a poultry farm, sold in 1909 and given to a horse breeder in 1920. On July 19, 1944, the first Canadian troops (Canadian Scottish Regiment) reached Cormelles. The then mayor had advised the residents to leave the city. During the operation Totalize Noirmoutier was bombed and destroyed.
