Verson is a commune with 3616 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the arrondissement of Caen and the canton of Caen-1 .
etymology
Verson is derived from the Romanesque patronymic Vercius . At the end there is the Latin property suffix -o / -onis.
geography
Verson is about seven kilometers southwest of Caen . The A84 motorway between Caen and Rennes partially crosses the municipality. Bordering municipalities are Saint-Manvieu-Norrey , Carpiquet , Bretteville-sur-Odon , Thue et Mue , Mouen , Baron-sur-Odon , Fontaine-Étoupefour and Éterville .
The river Odon runs along the southern border of the municipality and flows into the Orne six kilometers further . In Verson the Odon is divided into the two side arms Petit Odon and Grand Odon .
geology
The municipality has a hilly landscape. The top layer consists of lime from the Jurassic period. However, in the river bed of the Odon (on the border between Verson and Fontaine-Étoupefour ) slate ( Flysch von Laize ) from the Proterozoic are exposed. The community lies on the border between the Armorican massif and the Paris basin .

Attractions
- Saint-Germain church from the 12th century, registered as a Monument historique since May 21, 1910 . Inside is a 16th century Christ on the cross
added to the list of historical items.
- A cross in the cemetery has also been included in the list of historical objects since October 4, 1932.
- Manoir de la Fontaine, 16th century manor house, monument historique since April 17, 1933.
Community partnerships
A community partnership has existed with the German community of Hambühren in Lower Saxony since 1992.
Personalities
- Léopold Sédar Senghor (1906–2001), Senegal's first president, was married to Colette Hubert, who came from Normandy, in 1957. He died in Verson, where he spent the last years of his life. Him a sculpture erected in honor of "The Baobab and the apple tree."
