Fontaine-Étoupefour is a French commune with 2,348 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the arrondissement of Caen and the canton of Évrecy . The residents are known as the Stoupefontainois .

geography

Fontaine-Étoupefour is located around four kilometers southwest of Caen in the Odon Valley on the A84 autoroute . The area of ​​the municipality is 508 ha, of which around 65% is used for agriculture. The municipality is surrounded by Verson in the north, Éterville in the east, Maltot in the southeast, Esquay-Notre-Dame in the south, Baron-sur-Odon in the southwest and Mouen in the west.

history

In 1944 the community was the site of the Battle of Caen shortly after the Allied troops landed in Normandy. In the southeast of the city lies the hill 112 , a strategically important point in the Second World War . The hill was the site of Operation Jupiter (July 10-11, 1944) in which it was captured.
