geography
Pont-d'Ouilly lies in the middle of the Norman Switzerland landscape , at the mouth of the Noireau river and the Orne . The place is 40 kilometers south of Caen , 18 kilometers west of Falaise and twelve kilometers east of Condé-sur-Noireau . The municipality borders on the neighboring Orne department . The highest point in the municipality is the 252 meter high Mont-Pitois . The Orne River is the lowest point in the north of the municipality with a height of 42 meters.
structure
Pont-d'Ouilly is made up of the three formerly independent municipalities of Saint-Marc-d'Ouilly (Canton Thury-Harcourt ), Saint-Christophe and Ouilly-le-Basset (both Canton Falaise). Saint-Christophe was the smallest of the three parishes and was incorporated into Ouilly-le-Basset as early as 1826. At that time Ouilly-le-Basset was on the right bank of the Orne, Saint-Marc-d'Ouilly on the left. Also because both communities were badly damaged by the Second World War , they were merged on August 23, 1947.
Culture and sights
history
In January 1818, Pont-d'Ouilly was connected to the postal system. Three years later, in July 1821, a post office was set up. This changed its location in 1881. The phone came to Pont-d'Ouilly in 1905. With the opening of the line from Berjou to Caen, the place was connected to the railway network on May 15, 1873. A year later, the line from Berjou to Falaise was opened, but was closed in 1969. Pont-d'Ouilly has had its own fire department since February 25, 1892 .
The first school in town was a Jesuit school, which was established in 1715. The public school of Ouilly-le-Basset opened in 1852, that of Saint-Marc-d'Ouilly in 1877. The foundation stone for the current school was laid on April 12, 1953.
Churches
The Sainte-Therèse church in the center of the village was built in 1925 on the spot where a chapel had stood since the 12th century. It was blessed in 1926 and consecrated on October 16, 1932. It was the first church to bear the name of St. Therese of Lisieux . The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in the Ouilly-le-Basset district has existed since 1860, when it replaced an old chapel. Its stained glass windows, dating from 1961, depict the seven sacraments . The Saint-Medard church is located in the Saint-Marc-d'Ouilly district . It was built in 1889 and replaced an older church building from the 12th century. The Saint-Roch chapel is also located in Saint-Marc-d'Ouilly . This late 16th century chapel was completely renovated in 1933. Paintings inside show the life of Rochus de Montpellier , to whom the chapel is dedicated.
bridges
The old bridge over the Orne was supported by eight arches and lasted until the 19th century. It linked Ouilly-le-Basset with Saint-Marc-d'Ouilly. A new bridge was built between 1849 and 1851. This was only a little later, by a flood on October 5, 1852, partially destroyed. The bridge then repaired consisted of five arches. On August 12, 1944, this bridge was finally destroyed after it had already been badly damaged. British troops completed a makeshift bridge on August 19th. In 1947, work began on the current bridge, which was officially inaugurated on May 17, 1948.
