Courseulles-sur-Mer is a French municipality with 4199 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Calvados in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the arrondissement of Caen and the canton of Courseulles-sur-Mer . The inhabitants are called Courseullais .

geography

Courseulles-sur-Mer lies directly on the English Channel , into which the Seulles River flows. Courseulles-sur-Mer is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bernières-sur-Mer in the east, Bény-sur-Mer in the south, Reviers in the south-west, Banville in the west and Graye-sur-Mer in the north-west.

history

In the eleventh century the place is mentioned as Corcella or corticella (Latin for "small domain").

During the Second World War, the so-called Juno Beach was assigned to the Canadians for landing in Operation Overlord . Courseulles lies in the Mike section , which was stormed by the Canadian Third Infantry Division on June 6, 1944.

Infrastructure

Courseulles-sur-Mer has a larger marina. The former Route nationale 814 runs through the municipality . The Chemins de fer du Calvados train station has been closed, and there is now a cinema in the former station building.
