The Canal de Caen à la Mer is a shipping canal that runs in France , in the Calvados department , in the Normandy region .
Course and technical infrastructure
It is a canal of the marine canal type , but can also be assigned to the side canal type , as it was laid parallel to the Orne River . It connects the city port (Bassin Saint-Pierre) of Caen with the English Channel at Ouistreham over a distance of 15 kilometers. The difference in height is only around four meters, and a lock was built to overcome it, which in the current expansion stage has two parallel lock chambers with 225 × 28 m and 181 × 18 m and thus for some ocean-going ships an entrance deep into the inland, up to the departmental capital Caen , allowed. The canal is supplied with water by the Orne River.
