B. in the west the Neuselhalder Heide, in the east the Steinheimer Heide and in the south the heather landscapes on the Burgstall and the Knillberg. The bottom of the crater is free of forest. history
Early history
The Steinheim Basin was already being used by people in the Middle Paleolithic around 70,000 to 50,000 years ago. Artifacts from the Heidenschmiede in Heidenheim an der Brenz prove that Neanderthals collected the raw material for the manufacture of their stone tools here . The oldest evidence of the presence of modern humans in the area of today's Steinheim was found in a hunting camp on Lake Neuchâtel around 300 km away . Around 15,000 years ago , Upper Paleolithic hunters and gatherers brought numerous snail shells there that they had picked up in the Steinheim snail sands.
The first settlement of Steinheim am Albuch probably took place in the Hallstatt period 800–480 BC. Instead of. Individual burial mounds testify to this . At the beginning of the 5th century, the Alemanni settled here . The formerly existing places Westheim in the west and Ostheim in the east merged to Steinheim, while the south-facing south-east changed its name to Suntheim and later to Sontheim.
middle Ages
Steinheim was first mentioned in a document in 839 in a basic directory of the Fulda monastery . It probably came to this through a gift from the Frankish King Pippin or Charlemagne . In 1190, the brothers Wittegow and Berengar von Albeck founded an Augustinian canon monastery on the Klosterberg, which later fell to the Counts of Helfenstein . The Roman-German King Albrecht I acquired it in 1302 and handed it over with all rights and ownership to the newly founded Cistercian monastery in Königsbronn . In the 15th century the monastery yard was given up and farmers took over the management.
Modern times
As a result of the Reformation, in the 16th century, today's municipal area became part of the Duchy of Württemberg and for the most part subordinated to the now Protestant monastery office of Königsbronn. In the Thirty Years' War , the town was destroyed two-thirds. With the establishment of the Kingdom of Württemberg , the Protestant monastery office was dissolved and Steinheim and Söhnstetten were assigned to the Heidenheim Oberamt . The administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg led to membership in the extended district of Heidenheim in 1938 . In 1945 the places became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.
On May 29, 2016, the "Elvira" low pressure area caused flooding. There was enormous damage. The water was up to two meters high. There were power outages in the north of Steinheim.
Religions
Due to the Reformation, the place was predominantly Protestant until 1945. Today's Evangelical St. Peter's Church was built in 1780 instead of a previous church of the same name and serves as a place of worship for the parish of Steinheim am Albuch . In the district of Söhnstetten there is a separate Protestant parish with the Martinskirche . Both parishes belong to the church district Heidenheim of the regional church in Württemberg . Immediately after the Second World War "Hungarian Germans" - still under Mayor Hahn - were settled. Since these mostly belonged to the Roman Catholic denomination, a Roman Catholic community also emerged. In 1959 the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit was built and in 1961 its own Catholic parish was founded. Today it belongs to the Catholic Dean's Office Heidenheim of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart . Currently (as of December 31, 2018) the number of Catholics is 2,509 (29.6%) out of a total of 8,463 inhabitants.
Incorporations
On January 1, 1971 Söhnstetten was incorporated. The community of Söhnstetten had around 1800 inhabitants. In Söhnstetten there is a sports, music and fruit and horticultural association as well as the volunteer fire brigade . Söhnstetten has its own primary school from 1st to 4th grade, the Seeberg School. Söhnstetten is surrounded by a juniper heather, has its own ski lift and a disc golf course. In 2008 Söhnstetten was the venue for the European Disc Golf Championship. There are many cycling and hiking trails around Söhnstetten.
